There is no doubt that Leeds United’s main priority this season is to win automatic promotion to the Premier League. The Whites have been excellent for the majority of the campaign and remain on course to achieve their goals.
And, although ending the club’s 15-year wait of returning to the top-flight would be pleasing enough for everyone at Elland Road, being in England’s top competition could also be sweetened even further.
What’s the News?
According to a report by Football Insider, Marcelo Bielsa’s side could be in line for a guaranteed £177million windfall if they were to win promotion.
The figures are thought to be made up of three payments, with TV revenue accounting for £94.7m, whilst they would also receive parachute payments of £44.9m and £37.3m, even if they were to finish rock-bottom of the division.
It is also claimed that if they were to survive one season, they could receive another payment worth £18.4m.
There is no doubt that playing football in the Premier League is extremely lucrative for clubs these days, however, if Leeds ever needed a carrot dangled in front of them to win promotion this season, that figure could certainly be worth chasing.
Receiving a mega windfall like that could be brilliant for the Whites as it is likely that they would be able to have a rather large amount of funds available for player transfers and with Bielsa at the helm, there’s no saying who they might be able to attract to Elland Road.
The money could help them to compete with some of their Premier League rivals in attracting players and being able to offer some rather attractive wages, whilst they could also look to use the funds to develop other areas at the club.
However, money has not always been the key to success for a number of clubs in the past, with the likes of Fulham this season just going to show that splashing the cash really does not always help.
In honesty, Leeds look to be a better run club and it is unlikely they will spend unnecessarily, however, having £177m in the coffers must be a nice feeling to have.
