Queens Park Rangers: Nahki Wells nominated for Championship Player of the Month

Queens Park Rangers striker Nahki Wells has been nominated for the Sky Bet Championship Player of the Month award for September.

The 29-year-old is shortlisted alongside three other players from England’s second tier. Fulham’s Tom Cairney, Kamil Grosicki at Hull City and Wigan Athletic defender Chey Dunkley are the others who are in the frame.

It has been a superb month for Wells, who certainly proved his worth to Queens Park Rangers.

The former Bradford City striker began September in style against Luton Town, scoring a brace against the Hatters at Loftus Road to help his team win the game 3-2.

He then followed that up with another match-winning performance away from home against Millwall. The R’s beat their London rivals 2-1 at the Den, with Wells scoring both goals.

The only blot on his copybook last month was against West Brom, when he failed to get on the scoresheet as Rangers lost 2-0. However, a record of four goals in three September fixtures is very impressive and it is easy to see why he has been nominated for the award.

There is no doubt that Wells certainly deserves his nomination for Player of the Month. His goals were crucial for QPR in September and effectively won them six points against Luton and Millwall.

He faces stiff competition however, with each of the other three players having a strong claim to win themselves. Fulham midfielder Cairney hit two goals in three appearances in the month which helped the Cottagers to two draws and a win (via WhoScored).

Grosicki netted himself three goals in three games for Hull City (WhoScored), but it is perhaps Dunkley who is Wells’ biggest rival for the award.

Despite being a centre-back, the Wigan defender managed to score three goals in September whilst also keeping one clean sheet, helping the Latics pick up four points (via TransferMarkt).

It could be a close race between the four players, but it does look as though Wells and Dunkley will be the front-runners.
