Premier League newcomers Sheffield United and Aston Villa look set to battle it out to sign Brentford striker Neal Maupay.
According to the Sun on Sunday, it is a two-horse race between United and Villa to land the French striker, who scored an impressive 28 goals last season for Thomas Frank’s side in the second tier.
Both Villa and United have been active in the transfer window this summer albeit on different ends of the spending spectrum, but Maupay’s value of around £15m is thought to be of interest to both Dean Smith and Chris Wilder, who are keen on adding as much firepower as possible to their squads.
Brentford have been keen to keep hold of the 22-year-old but know they face a tough task in keeping him this summer given there is so much interest. Indeed, Maupay has thus far been removed from any pre-season games and preparations as speculation continues.
Maupay’s goal ratio is impressive but he brings so much more to the table too, something which was proven by his impressive eight assists last term, meaning he was directly involved in 36 of Brentford’s 73 goals last season.
Sheffield United have added striker Lys Mousset to the ranks this weekend, with the speedy forward joining from Brentford. However, it is believed United are not done with their spending just yet, with manager Chris Wilder admitting he expected the club to break their transfer record a few times this summer.
With the Blades being outscored by three Championship teams last season and none of Billy Sharp, David McGoldrick or Mousset proving overly prolific in the Premier League, perhaps the addition of another marksman would be a good idea. Granted, Maupay has never played in the top flight himself, but more options for Wilder may prove useful over the course of the campaign.
Clearly, he’s a highly-rated talent considering the reported interest in the player and a Football Whispers report of him written last year talks about his ability to score all kinds of goals, which may help Sheffield United. If they can keep things tight at the back, he could be the man to carve something out in a tight game.
Blades and Villa fans, what do you think? Is Maupay the man to fire in the goals? Let us know in the comments!
