Sheffield Wednesday manager Garry Monk has ruled Massimo Luongo out of their Championship fixture against Swansea City at the weekend, according to The Star’s Dom Howson (via @domhowson on Twitter).
The Owls boss has also provided an update on Tom Lees’ return to fitness ahead of their trip to the Liberty Stadium.
Luongo has missed Sheffield Wednesday’s last two fixtures against Leeds United and Blackburn Rovers with an ankle injury (Transfermarkt).
The Australian had just broken into the Owls starting line-up prior to the problem, and was showing good form with two goals in three appearances (Transfermarkt).
It was thought that the injury was only minor and that he wouldn’t miss much action, however, Monk has now confirmed that he will not be available for the Swansea game and that he is taking “a little bit longer” than they thought to recover (@domhowson).
As for Lees, Monk has confirmed that he should be available for selection after the upcoming international break following his lengthy spell on the sidelines (@swfc).
It is disappointing news for the Owls that Luongo’s injury is taking longer to heal than they thought.
However, they don’t want to risk him making anything worse and therefore leaving him out for the trip to Swansea is a sensible move.
Monk admitted that the Australian could return to training next week (@domhowson), so they shouldn’t be without him for too much longer, which is more positive.
It is also good news that Lees is closing in on a return following his long absence from the team. As captain, his experience will be vital in the changing room, and his return brings competition for places at centre-back.
