Sheffield Wednesday right-back Liam Palmer has been named in Steve Clarke’s Scotland squad for their upcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers against Cyprus and Kazakhstan (@ScotlandNT).
However, his teammates Barry Bannan and Steven Fletcher have once again missed out.
This is the fourth time that Palmer has been included in the Scotland squad, with each of his previous three call-ups also coming in 2019 (Transfermarkt).
He has so far made three appearances for his country, and started in both games against Russia and San Marino back in October (Transfermarkt).
Palmer will hope to earn more caps in this next international break and nail down the right-back position.
As for Bannan and Fletcher, they both have once again missed out on call-ups from Scotland. The latter has not been involved at all with the side in their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign, with his most recent appearance for his country coming in the Nations League back in November 2018 (Transfermarkt).
It has been an even longer absence from the squad for Bannan, whose last game for Scotland was a World Cup qualifier against Slovenia way back in October 2017 (Transfermarkt).
It is no surprise that Palmer is once again in the squad, given that he was Clarke’s right-back of choice in both of their October fixtures.
He has also been a regular for Sheffield Wednesday this season, and has helped them to three clean sheets in their last five Championship outings (Transfermarkt).
It is also not really a shock that Bannan and Fletcher’s name were not included on the list of players called up, due to the fact that as already mentioned they haven’t been in the squad for a while now.
Added to that, Fletcher has not scored in his last five Championship appearances for Wednesday (Transfermarkt), whilst the Scots have midfielders such as John Fleck and John McGinn playing well in the Premier League at the moment, which is likely to be a reason why Bannan isn’t being selected.
