Just four points separate Sheffield Wednesday and their chances of obtaining a playoff spot, however, plenty will need to happen for the Owls to have a realistic chance of achieving what is an unlikely spot.
Steve Bruce’s side will need to ensure they are victorious on Saturday afternoon to keep their extremely slim hopes alive when they meet Preston North End at Deepdale.
What’s the News?
According to a match preview by the club’s official website, Keiren Westwood may have handed the Owls a boost ahead of their trip to Deepdale.
The Republic of Ireland international returned to training earlier in the week after a knee injury had forced him to miss the Easter weekend schedule.
Kieran Lee is also in contention of making a timely return to the side, as he has been out since December 2017 with a troublesome hip injury.
However, Adam Reach is likely to miss the rest of the season with his own knee problem, whilst Rolando Aarons (ankle) and Sam Hutchinson (hamstring) will not be involved.
Achraf Lazaar is considered a doubt for Sheffield Wednesday’s trip after he missed training on Friday due to illness.
Although Sheffield Wednesday’s chances appear to be extremely slim, Westwood’s potentially availability will come as a huge boost. The Republic of Ireland international shot-stopper has been outstanding for Bruce’s side since coming back into the side.
The veteran goalkeeper has been a huge reason as to why the Owls still have an outside chance and has made the decision that Jos Luhukay made to freeze him out appear even more ludicrous.
However, although his potential return could be a timely boost, the news that Reach is out for the remainder of the season will have come as a blow, whilst Aarons’ and Hutchinson’s being unavailable will also have been frustrating.
Reach has been a key member of the team, whilst Hutchinson has featured prominently for Bruce during his tenure at Hillsborough. Aarons has played a part since joining on loan and has been a threat in the final third.
Lazaar has been solid in the performances he has put in for the Owls recently and would have been hoping to make an impression in the final few games to try and earn a permanent move to the club in the summer.
