Sheffield Wednesday centre-back Tom Lees made his return to action on Monday as he took part in the club’s under-23’s fixture against Burnley (via swfc.co.uk).
Does Tom Lees walk straight back into the starting XI?
The Owls drew the game which took place at Curzon Ashton’s Tameside Stadium 1-1, with Jordan Rhodes scoring their only goal.
Lees has been missing for a while due to a hamstring injury which he picked up in the warm-up prior to their game against Queens Park Rangers back in August (Sheffield Star).
The defender began the season as a regular in the side and started Wednesday’s opening five games, but following his injury he has been forced to sit out their last 10 Championship fixtures (Transfermarkt).
However, he is now closing in on full fitness and therefore being available for first-team action.
After returning to training last week (@domhowson), the former Leeds man has now managed to get his first game under his belt. He played just over an hour before being substituted, and came through it unscathed (swfc.co.uk).
The return of Lees is certainly a positive for the Owls and Garry Monk. Not only is he a good defender but he is also their club captain, and therefore brings a wealth of experience back into the dressing room.
However, in his absence, Dominic Iorfa has taken his place in the team (Transfermarkt) and he has formed a handy partnership with Julian Borner.
Indeed the duo have conceded just eight goals in the nine games they have played together since Lees picked up his injury, helping the side to four wins and two draws.
Therefore Lees may find it quite tough to break back into the starting line-up at Hillsborough, although with the busy Christmas period on the horizon he is likely to be called upon at some point, making his pending return a big boost for the manager’s depth going into the toughest part of the campaign.
Sheffield Wednesday fans, would you put Tom Lees back into the starting 11 once he is fully fit? Or are you happy with Julian Borner and Dominic Iorfa? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…
