# Newcastle United: Magpies in battle with Manchester United over Real Valladolid defender Mohammed Salisu

**According to Spanish outlet [AS via Sport Witness](https://sportwitness.co.uk/newcastle-join-man-united-in-transfer-chase-agent-attentive-to-summer-options-e12m-fee/), Newcastle United have entered a race with Premier League rivals Manchester United to sign promising young Real Valladolid defender Mohammed Salisu, with La Liga giants Real and Atletico Madrid also in pursuit.**

Salisu, who has put together a string of ‘[impressive](https://en.as.com/en/2020/02/12/football/1581536515_753402.html)‘ performances this campaign for Valladolid, is now being watched by both the Magpies and United, unsurprising when taking into account his potential. The 20-year-old centre-back has also attracted praise from his club’s current manager Sergio Gonzalez, with the Spaniard hailing him as a player in ‘[full growth](https://www.ghanaweb.com/GhanaHomePage/SportsArchive/Real-Valladolid-coach-praises-Mohammed-Salisu-after-Real-Sociedad-draw-809791)‘ and one who can only get better over time ([GhanaWeb](https://www.ghanaweb.com/GhanaHomePage/SportsArchive/Real-Valladolid-coach-praises-Mohammed-Salisu-after-Real-Sociedad-draw-809791)).

Compared to current Newcastle defensive favourite Jamaal Lascelles, Salisu has amassed more tackles on average than the Englishman this campaign (1.4) whilst winning more aerial duels (2.6), [as per WhoScored.com.](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/362357/Show/Mohammed-Salisu)

Those statistics perhaps explain why Salisu is reportedly rated by Newcastle boss Steve Bruce, even if his squad is seemingly well-stocked when it comes to centre-back depth. Federico Fernandez, Ciaran Clark, Jamaal Lascelles and Fabian Schar have all shown what they can offer at different points throughout the campaign but Salisu’s current [£9.9m release clause](https://sportwitness.co.uk/newcastle-join-man-united-in-transfer-chase-agent-attentive-to-summer-options-e12m-fee/) could be a heavy temptation in a swoop for the youngster this summer.

Despite lying [15th](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/teams/real-valladolid/table) in La Liga, Valladolid have kept the seventh most clean sheets this season ([8 as per Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jumplist/weisseweste/wettbewerb/ES1)), with Salisu’s growing form debatably being a contributing factor.

Despite Newcastle’s defensive depth looking like the least of their worries, with priority seemingly placed on finding a prolific goalscorer, the Ghanaian’s cheap price tag could be an indicator that they should try to land his signature ahead of Manchester United.
