Could this season be about to get even better? Automatic promotion is no longer a long-shot and should others around them drop points, Pompey could be in prime position to take advantage.
Ever since their brilliant Checkatrade Trophy win, confidence has been sky-high and results have been perfect.
If they can sustain this level of high performance, there is no reason as to why Portsmouth can’t find themselves in the Championship next season. Of course, they would have to ensure the summer window is used adequately, making sure they have the right standard of players to at least make them competitive whatever league they’re in.
Though recent business they concluded is equally as important, specifically Ben Close agreeing a new deal with the club.
Close, (who is valued at £68k on Transfermarkt) has enjoyed yet another strong season in the blue shirt of Portsmouth and hence the new contract is his reward.
Keeping him until 2021 is a good decision because it has to be remembered that Ben Close is still only 22-years-old, so, therefore, has plenty of time to improve. As much as you Pompey fans probably don’t want to hear this, there’s also a pretty high sell-on value surely in play here.
Portsmouth know what they have in Close is a reliable midfielder that consistently helps out in defence and attack.
With six goals and two assists in his 39 appearances thus far, that stats only partly explain how vital he is for Portsmouth and whether or not they get promoted, he will surely remain an important figure at Fratton Park.
There is nothing fans love to see more than a player from the academy getting the chance to thrive on the big stage and that’s exactly what Ben Close continues to do for Portsmouth.
