Portsmouth midfielder Ben Close has been nominated for the Sky Bet League One Goal of the Month award for August, as reported on the club’s official channels.
His nomination comes for his strike in the 2-0 victory against Tranmere Rovers, which saw him fire the ball into the top corner from range on the half-volley, as shown on the Sky Sports website.
The strikes he will be up against are Marcus Maddison’s effort against MK Dons and Niall Ennis’ goal against Lincoln City.
This is not Close’s only wonder-strike of the campaign, as he scored a superb volley to help Pompey to a 3-0 Carabao Cup victory over Birmingham City, as shown in the highlights video on the Portsmouth FC YouTube channel.
The 23-year-old has also shown himself to have good technique in other areas, maintaining a pass success rate of 80.6%, while also averaging 2 tackles per game, as per WhoScored.
He has also averaged 0.8 bad controls per game, which is a fairly good number for a League One midfielder.
Close definitely has a good chance of walking away with the award, as his strike was a superb one which showed brilliant technique to avoid sending it way over the bar – even though the other competitors also have a strong case.
While it will be nice for him to win, most people involved with Portsmouth, including the player himself, will likely be more focused on making sure three points are won against Burton Albion tonight.
