Kenny Jackett has claimed that Portsmouth’s midweek win over Birmingham City could motivate his side this weekend against Tranmere Rovers.
Speaking the club’s official website, the Pompey boss said that the 3-0 League Cup win over the Championship side could be what his side need to get their League One season back on track.
The south coast side lost their opening game of the league season to Shrewsbury, falling to a 1-0 defeat away from home.
Speaking ahead to this weekend’s matchup with Tranmere, Jackett said: “We needed the game on Tuesday because we weren’t at our best against Shrewsbury, although we were unlucky to lose.
“It gave us the opportunity to show everyone the new dynamics of the team and what we’re working towards. Hopefully, that will help us as we build to what’s a really big game for us now against Tranmere at Fratton Park.”
As well as playing up his side into what has now become an important game for Pompey, Jackett also made it clear that Tranmere won’t be pushovers despite being recently promoted into League One.
The Portsmouth boss said: “They’re a newly-promoted side and will have some momentum after an excellent season, which came just after they got up from the National League.
“Great progress has been made under Micky Mellon and they’ll now be looking to make their mark in this division. They’ve added to their squad and I believe they’ve added well, with some shrewd moves in the transfer market.”
Losing the opening game to Shrewsbury was the worst way for Portsmouth to start the new season following a campaign where the south coast side came close to promotion to the Championship, and Jackett’s side will need to react quickly if they are to make it to a similar stage this year.
Indeed, the win over Birmingham during the League Cup midweek was impressive, and Jackett appears to be eager to build upon that result by continuing the momentum into the game against Tranmere.
The Whites also lost their opening game of the League One season, and Pompey could use this result as well as the Fratton Park home advantage to get a good result over the newly-promoted side.
