Portsmouth: The march for second place begins now, and Pompey are in the driving seat

With five games to go in the League One season, each match is being a treated as a must-win encounter for teams with something to fight for, and for Portsmouth, they could be in for a club-changing few weeks.

With a game in hand over second place Barnsley and two points behind them, Pompey have a golden opportunity to sneak into the final automatic promotion spot in the League One table, and with two games in the span of four days on the horizon, Portsmouth’s charge for a top-two finish begins now, and they will have the belief they can get it over the line.

Since the EFL Trophy win, Portsmouth have been the inform team in the division, winning their past six games in a row and not looking likely to give up on any steam yet. An emphatic 4-1 win over Rochdale coupled with Sunderland slipping up against Coventry City has blown the race for promotion wide-open in the league, and if Kenny Jackett can keep this kind of form up going into today’s game against Burton, the south coast side will be in control of their Championship destiny.

The game on the 27th April against Sunderland will still remain the game that could define who finishes second in the league, but with the Black Cats playing away to play-off hopefuls Doncaster Rovers, there could be room for another slip up from Jack Ross’ side heading into the run-in.

Portsmouth fans would have taken a play-off spot heading into this season, but with an automatic promotion spot now a genuine possibility, you can’t see Jackett aiming for anything less from his squad, and it all starts with Pompey getting the job done over Burton.

Portsmouth fans, can Pompey secure a top-two spot? Let us know!
