Unsung Hero: James Bolton put in a brilliant performance despite AFC Wimbledon loss

Portsmouth’s James Bolton may have been on the wrong end of a 1-0 scoreline against AFC Wimbledon, but he still put an impressive performance.

This result means that Pompey sit 18th in the league, with just 13 points from 11 games, though this is not necessarily down to the defence, as league leaders Ipswich Town is the only side to have conceded fewer goals.

When Bolton returned from injury, he insisted that he was going to kick on and while the results haven’t indicated this, the right-back’s performance showed that he is on the way to doing just that.

Bolton was solid defensively, completing all 3 of the tackles that he attempted, while also making 4 clearances and winning 3 aerial duels, as per WhoScored.

The 25-year-old also showed that he can be effective going forward, as he completed 2 dribbles, while he also made 4 key passes – which was the joint highest tally of any player on the pitch for both.

Another indication of how influential the right-back was is that he had 8.6% of the game’s overall possession, which is more than any other player on the pitch.

Bolton will likely be feeling hard-done-by that he is on the losing side from Saturday’s game, but the result shouldn’t detract from his performance.
