Former Sunderland player Chris Brown has spoken about some sections of the Black Cats’ fanbase and suggested that they are among the worst for the abuse they give to players.
Speaking on his Under The Cosh podcast, as reported by the Roker Report, the ex-striker spoke about the treatment he received from supporters, and what his teammates had to deal with. In particular, he paid attention to former goalkeepers Kelvin Davis and Jason Steele, both of whom were part of severely under-performing Sunderland teams, Davis getting relegated from the Premier League with 19 points and Steele part of the relegated Championship side.
Many supporters have now been reacting to his comments and there is a mixed view being espoused, with some arguing that any criticism was well-deserved. However, some realise that the level of abuse from the terraces has been unwarranted and even this season, some fans have been unnecessarily harsh, with their initial treatment of Phil Parkinson now leaving many backtracking on their previous attitude.
Here is some of the reaction to Brown’s comments.
Hes not wrong really but it goes on at every club

No chris we just expect professional players to be better than local Sunday morning teams. And to be fair you hardly set the world on fire

They all deserved it

Abuse of any player is wrong. Fans are well within their right to let a player know during a game if they aren’t putting in the effort. When it gets personal and other comments are made, that’s where the line is crossed.

On another note, those 2 keepers were conceding goals that they shouldn’t have week in week out, both leading to relegation. Do they really expect a ‘Nevermind old chap, better luck next’ and a chant made up for them

Ironically Brown has named two of the worst footballers to enter a football pitch
