As quoted by The Sunderland Echo, Sunderland captain John O’Shea has reminded his team of the positives from their 2-0 loss at Liverpool at the weekend.
Indeed, our resident Black Cats fans here in the Transfer Tavern are also feeling upbeat after their showing at Anfield with them getting close to earning a point off of Jurgen Klopp’s side.
The Reds have been in fine form this season and lie a point behind Chelsea in the title race at the top of the league but they really struggled to break the men from the north east down, whilst the visitors also had chances to really cause an upset.
In the end, it wasn’t to be as goals in the second half from Divock Origi and James Milner secured the game but O’Shea feels there’s plenty that should be taken from the result.
O’Shea said: “We have the ability to score goals and get clean sheets. Combine those two things, we are very close.
“Another day and we could have been coming away from Anfield with a clean sheet and a point.
“It is very positive, from that point of view.”
Indeed, Sunderland did have promising moments where they could have scored through the likes of Duncan Watmore so, whilst the result wasn’t what they wanted, against opposition lower down in the league a performance like that should see them secure three points.
The defeat saw Sunderland return to the bottom of the table as relegation rivals Swansea chalked up a remarkable 5-4 win over Crystal Palace.
