Sunderland will need to start turning one point into three if they want to secure automatic promotion to the Championship this season, as they’ve dropped far too many points in recent times.
The Black Cats have already secured the services of Jimmy Dunne this month and they’re reportedly (as per Sky Sports) in talks with Middlesbrough over signing Grant Leadbitter.
Sadly, it looks as if the League One club are set to lose Josh Maja before the January transfer window shuts, as he’s reportedly (as per Sky Sports) on the verge of joining French side Bordeaux for £3.5 million.
So, Stewart Donald has a big job on his hands to secure a potential replacement for the Englishman, as he has been their standout performer up until this point with 16 goals to his name.
One player who could fill the huge void is Gillingham’s Tom Eaves.
The 27-year-old has been prolific at the Priestfield Stadium this season, with 15 goals to his name in all competitions, including a goal against Sunderland. It’s safe to say that his aerial dominance and eagle eye for goal would have fans feeling like their star man had never left as he has pretty much matched Maja on the scoring front this season.
Another forward who could step up to the plate is Wigan Athletic’s Will Grigg.
Indeed, the Northern Ireland international has made a name for himself over the years as one of the most prolific forwards to have ever graced League One. He found the back of the net 26 times during the Latics’ title-winning campaign last season, and grabbed 28 goals back in the 2015/16 campaign, so he’s as accomplished as they get.
Therefore, he may just be the best option to potentially replace Maja as his goal record is a level above Eaves’, plus his experience in previous promotion races could prove crucial.
