Gael Andonian handed trial at Sunderland

Sunderland are considering whether to offer an international free agent a contract after trialling for the club’s Under-23’s.

According to a report by the Newcastle Chronicle, Gael Andonian was handed his first chance to impress the Black Cats during their Premier League 2 fixture with West Bromwich Albion on Monday night.

Jack Ross was in attendance, with a couple of members of his backroom staff, to watch the 23-year-old, as they look to make a decision on the centre-back.

Andonian, who has featured 23 times for Armenia, was released from his contact at Olympique de Marseille in the summer, meaning the Black Cats could still sign him, despite the transfer window being closed.

He predominately plays as a centre-back, however, he is fairly versatile and can play on the left-hand side of the defence as well, which would give Ross another option at the back.

The Verdict:

Andonian could become an excellent signing for Sunderland this summer, should they decide to take up an option to add him to their squad.

The defender would help to bolster their defensive options, and with League One being a difficult division to navigate, he could become a key player for the side throughout the campaign.

Andonian has some experience of playing at the top level, as well as having featured at the international level and could certainly become a handy option for Ross.
