Sunderland find themselves in a promising position in the race for promotion to the Championship, with the Christmas period possibly deciding their fate.
The Black Cats will need to ensure consistency if they are to make anything of their current position, as they have slipped up in games that they really should be winning.
Stewart Donald will have one eye on the January transfer window with no rest expected over the Christmas period. A couple of quality signing would boost the club’s promotion chances, so he better have his list of targets in hand.
Of course, the sad reality is that injuries and departures will always have a negative affect, but in an ideal world where departures and injuries aren’t a thing, here’s a look at what Sunderland’s ideal Xmas XI would look like…
SUNDERLAND’S IDEAL XMAS XI
Jon McLaughlin has been one of the shining lights at the Stadium of Light in the current campaign as he continues to put in match-winning performances.
Tom Flanagan has proved to be one of the signings of the summer for Jack Ross, with defensive solidity always guaranteed when he’s in the side. Although, the Black Cats could do with bringing in another central defender, so they should turn to Derby County’s Alex Pearce, who impressed last season but has fallen out of favour at Pride Park.
Indeed, Ross has swapped between Bryan Oviedo and Reece James in the current campaign, but it’s the Englishman who has done enough to deserve a regular starting place for the rest of the campaign.
Lee Cattermole is enjoying one of his best seasons in the red and white stripes having produced a number of goals already, with his no-nonsense defending really helping them out. Meanwhile, Max Power has been given his marching orders on a number of occasions, but when he keeps his head his performances have been top notch.
George Honeyman has been a key member for the Black Cats up until this point, with his leadership skills and creativity working wonders in many different ways. And, Lynden Gooch has come on leaps and bounds in the current campaign, as one of the main contributors for both goals and assists.
Sunderland’s ideal strike force would consist of Josh Maja and Jermain Defoe. The latter could easily show just how prolific he is if he drops down to League One, having been linked with a move to the Stadium of Light. But, goals aren’t the only thing that the experienced Englishman can provide in the side, as he would be a role model that Josh Maja can look up to and really bounce off at the pinnacle of the attack.
