It’s been a fairly miserable period for the Sunderland fans in the Transfer Tavern, who are desperate to see Simon Grayson impress at the helm on Wearside.
Indeed, the Black Cats propping up the bar appreciate the sheer size of the task at hand heading into the new campaign, so even the most ardent of supporters wouldn’t expect the ex-Preston North End boss to instantly top the league. In the eyes of many, the most important thing is restoring a sense of pride to the team, after so many disappointing years.
Which is why reports from the Sunderland Echo have proved so divisive. Following the departure of Vito Mannone to Reading, it seems Grayson is on the hunt for a new shot stopper to field between the sticks.
Interestingly enough, the report even mentions the name of former Newcastle United legend, Shay Given. Recently released from Stoke City, the 41-year-old spent time on loan with the Black Cats back in the late 90s, prior to his move to St. James’ Park.
Rob Green of Leeds United is another name touted, though a move for Given certainly would be interesting. Considering his strong connection to their biggest rivals, it’s definitely something to discuss.
