Lamina Kone hardly made himself a popular figure at Sunderland! The defender was quite clear that he did not want to play League One football for the club this season last summer and forced his way out of the club.
However, things do not appear to have gone as well as he would have liked this year and could be set to be heading back to the Stadium of Light with his tail tucked firmly between his legs.
What’s the News?
According to L’Equipe (per Sport Witness), Strasbourg are not believed to be willing to take up the option to turn Kone’s loan move into a permanent deal.
Despite having played in 26 matches across all competitions for the Ligue 1 outfit, the 30-year-old now appears to be heading back to England’s League One (or the Championship if Sunderland can navigate the final few obstacles in their promotion push).
Whether the possibility of being back in the Championship would change Kone’s mind about being back at Sunderland next season, the damage is likely already to have been done by his comments last year.
Jack Ross showed immediately when he was put in charge that if players did not want to give their all for the club then they would not have a future at the Stadium of Light and it is unlikely he will turn to the Ivory Coast international when he returns.
Should Strasbourg decide against trigging the clause in his loan agreement, it can only be seen as a blow to both parties, as neither of them will be too happy.
Sunderland would have been hoping that they could have raised funds from a sale, whilst the 30-year-old would have liked to have continued to play football at a higher standard.
It could be a long summer on Wearside, although many will be hoping any situation is not as bad as the ones they faced with Papy Djilobodji and Didier Ndong.
Sunderland fans, what do you make of the situation with Kone? Would you get rid of him or give him a chance in the Championship if he wants to play for the club? Join in with the discussion below by sharing your thoughts with us.
