The play-offs it is for Sunderland! After failing to pick up any points last time out in what was a disappointing 2-1 away defeat to Fleetwood, Sunderland helped confirm automatic promotion for Luton and Barnsley, that must of hurt.
Of course, hope is still alive for the Black Cats’ fans. With the final game of the season later today being a trip to bottom half Southend United, Jack Ross will hope his side can then kick on and have success in the all-important play-offs, where we can possibly see a round two between them and Portsmouth at Wembley, after just missing out on the EFL trophy earlier this season.
Ross will be well aware that rotation is key, and making sure that his best players are used in the Play-Offs, therefore we can expect plenty of changes from the Scot.
Here are a couple he should look to make.
Drop Chris Maguire
After producing a not so spectacular performance against Fleetwood, it would be no surprise to see the 30-year-old sit out the game later today and allow him to have rest before the play-off games.
Having provided an early season form of dreams, Jack Ross will be hoping that another break today will hopefully allow that form to flow out of Maguire once more in the games to come.
Start George Honeyman
After having been used as a cameo in the disappointment of Fleetwood, Honeyman will be itching at the chance to get a start in the side later today and show everyone a true captain’s performance and that he can propel the club forward.
When coming on, the 24-year-old attacking midfielder did change the game and really began to get the ball moving forward for Sunderland, maybe his inclusion was a little too late, but once again he fills the manager with positive hope.
A good performance for the Black Cats today, and the play-offs will be an exciting time, fail to win, and fans may just begin to worry that it may be another season in League One next year.
