Sunderland have struggled to turn one point into three in recent times as they now find themselves trailing even further behind Portsmouth and Luton Town.
The Black Cats will still feel confident that they can secure automatic promotion straight back to the Championship, but improvements could boost their chances massively.
Of course, this month will no doubt have a huge say on their promotion push, with the opportunity to gain the upper-hand. But, with potential departures occurring and Stewart Donald potentially missing out on transfer targets, they could easily find themselves worse off.
Therefore, here is the nightmare January for Sunderland…
JOSH MAJA HEADS FOR THE EXITS
Josh Maja has been the standout performer for Sunderland in the current campaign, with 15 goals and two assists to his name at this moment time.
However, the forward’s future continues to be surrounded with doubt after rejecting the club’s contract extension, with Premier League interest filtering in.
Of course, this could turn out to be a nightmare month for supporters if the Englishman ends up departing as it will be almost impossible to replace him, with their promotion push taking a hit.
STEWART DONALD FAILS TO DELIVER
Stewart Donald will be desperate to make a good impression on supporters in the current transfer window, with promotion possibly depending on it.
The Black Cats were in for Tony McMahon but he has since moved to Scunthorpe United, so the Wearside club have already missed out on a transfer target.
Therefore, with Maja possibly departing and with improvements required in other areas, this could turn out to be a month to forget if Donald fails to deliver some signings.
