Back in November 2014, after scouting different areas of the United States, Sunderland made a move for 16-year-old Lynden Gooch, bringing the young talent to England to join the academy setup and continue his development.
The winger would make an immediate impact in the Black Cats youth sides, impressing at both U18 and U21 level.
The United States international has since featured in all of Sunderland’s relegation campaigns, suffering a drop to the Championship in 2017, and then to League One in 2018.
The 24-year-old’s performances in the third tier this term have been solid though, netting an impressive 10 goals in 30 league games, making him arguably the best performer in a red and white shirt.
Doubts over whether or not Sunderland can achieve promotion back to the Championship remain, sitting 7th in the League One table as things stand, leaving the likes of Gooch to potentially look at their own career’s come the summer transfer window.
And, with interest coming in from Championship side Middlesbrough over recent weeks, Gooch could be the subject of further transfer bids from teams playing at a higher standard than Phil Parkinson’s side.
Currently valued at £540k by Transfermarkt, the tricky winger could be a good option for Boro to sign and a cheap one at that.
For Sunderland, promotion is key, or a number of players, like Gooch, could call time on their spell with the club and in doing so, leave for a smaller amount than they are actually worth.
Boro, who are claimed to have said they would make a move for the US international for the right price, will no doubt be keeping a close eye on Sunderland’s league standing, ahead of what could prove to be one of the bargain buys of the summer. It is unknown how much the Black Cats paid for Gooch and whilst they would likely make a profit from his sale, failure to gain promotion could see him go for less than they would want.
