Review: Jack Ross must be regretting letting Asoro leave

Review: Jack Ross must be regretting letting Asoro leave

It was a summer of change for Sunderland as not only did the club come under new ownership but also brought in a new manager following their second successive relegation.

Add the arrival of Stewart Donald and Jack Ross to the amount of new players that joined the club, and you would’ve thought that it was going to be a summer of rebuilding and redevelopment leading to possible contention for the playoffs.

Refreshingly for the fans, they’ve had a brilliant start to the season and in combination with Peterborough and Portsmouth, Sunderland have been one of the best sides in the league. Such has been their superb form, that they look like they have a chance of winning the league and securing automatic promotion back into the Championship.

Going forward Sunderland have played incredibly well but are incredibly reliant on youth product Josh Maja. The striker has scored nine goals in 13 games this season with Lynden Gooch, Chris Maguire and Lee Cattermole the next highest scorers with three each.

Over the summer, the club sold Joel Asoro to Swansea. The 19-year-old was in the last year of his contract and although he was in the last year of his contract, like Maja, Ross should’ve kept the youngster.

The Sweden under-21 international didn’t score many goals in the Championship last year but he still showed plenty of promise and in tandem with Maja, he could have formed a potent duo. A duo that might have just secured Sunderland’s promotion back into the Championship.

Sunderland fans, thoughts?
