Sunderland agree deal for former fierce rival

The Sunderland fans who are gathered at the bar in The Football Transfer Tavern this evening are attempting to decide whether they should be happy with reports that the club have agreed a deal to sign a new defender.

According to reports in The Guardian, the Black Cats have agreed a £4m deal to bring former Newcastle man, Davide Santon to the club from Inter Milan.

The Italian was once dubbed as the new Paolo Maldini early in his career, and is eager for a move back to the North East, with only a medical standing between the player and a move back to the Premier League.

The 25-year-old has had a string of operations on his right knee which have hindered his progression and hopes that all his injury problems are behind him and he will be hoping he can get his career back on track at The Stadium of Light.

The defender was also being monitored by his former Newcastle manager, Alan Pardew who was hoping to take him to Crystal Palace but it appears that Sunderland have beaten his side in the race for the Italian.

Sunderland fans, what do you make of this deal? Would you put aside his Toon Army past? Let us know in the comments below…
