Sunderland have arguably their biggest game of the season tomorrow; one which could define their entire season and hopes for promotion back to the Championship.
The Black Cats host Luton Town, who sit one point ahead of them in second place in League One. While Sunderland still have a game in hand, this would be a brilliant chance to leapfrog The Hatters and sit in an automatic promotion place.
However, the brilliant thing for Sunderland is that this match could not come at a more ideal time this season. While Luton have been flying high, they recently lost their manager Nathan Jones to Championship outfit Stoke. Jones was hugely influential at Luton, getting them promoted from League Two, and is one of the most highly regarded emerging managers. They will be lost without him, and this should be the chance for Sunderland to strike.
Luton have appointed Mick Harford as manager for now, and what that could mean is the players could look slightly unsure, as a new manager will bring a new approach. Harford may go on to have a lot of success at Luton, but there will be a period of transition now where Luton may suffer.
With that in mind, this could also be a chance for Sunderland to improve their goal difference with The Hatters. The Black Cats currently have a goal difference of 22, compared to Luton’s 25; a goal fest could see Sunderland steer clear of The Hatters in this department as well in points. In a season that may go down to the wire, this could be crucial. Tomorrow is Sunderland’s chance to take advantage of some good fortune.
