Denver Hume will have taken a lot of plaudits for Sunderland’s victory over Southend United, having helped keep a clean sheet and assisted the only goal of a game.
However, his fellow full-back, Conor McLaughlin, also put in a highly impressive display from the opposite side of the Black Cats’ defence, even if he was overshadowed.
A lot of Sunderland’s biggest moments of the game came from putting effective crosses into the box and using the wide areas well, as was the case for Luke O’Nien’s goal, as shown in the highlights video on the Southend United Football Club YouTube channel.
While no goals came of it, McLaughlin certainly made his mark on the game from the right-hand side, regarding his chance creation, as he played 4 key passes throughout the game, getting in good positions with the 2 dribbles he made, as per WhoScored.
The Northern Ireland international didn’t have too much to do defensively, as he only made 1 interception, while he did win 2 of his 3 aerial duels.
How integral he was to Sunderland’s game plan can be seen from how much of the ball he saw, keeping 8.2% of the game’s overall possession, which was 2.5% higher than anybody else on the pitch.
So while Hume will rightfully get plenty of congratulations for his performance, McLaughlin should as well.
