Sunderland could look to re-sign one of their academy graduates this summer, however, only if they can raise the funds.
Now 32-years-old, the midfielder originally left the club back in 2009, however, with Middlesbrough looking to make a couple of signings in the midfield position, his time at the Riverside Stadium could be coming to a close.
And, it is being claimed that Sunderland are thought to be interested in the £1.8million-rated man, as per Transfermarkt, although they will need to offload a couple of big earners first.
Although names are not mentioned, it is believed that Papy Djilobodji and Didier Ndong are two that will need to be shifted.
Leadbitter would certainly be a great addition to the side this summer and would be welcomed back to the Stadium of Light.
However, Sunderland will need to ensure they can offload the players they deem surplus to requirements and are on huge wages before they can bring the 32-year-old back to Wearside.
With just a couple of days left of the transfer window, it remains to be seen if Jack Ross can convince the Middlesbrough man to make a return to the club where it all started.
