Tuesday evening saw a whole host of EFL and premier league U21 sides take to the pitch in the EFL Trophy, with Sunderland being one of those. The Black Cats faced Carlisle at home, winning 3-1 on the night and there was one man who shone for Sunderland, young Ethan Robson. The midfielder fired home his club’s second goal before having to come off injured, but he left his mark.

Robson got 45 minutes of action under his belt before having to come off with a minor injury but that was all the youngster needed for fans to be lauding him as the best player on the pitch during the clash. It’s fairly obvious that the fans enjoyed having him in the middle of the park and whilst it wasn’t quite the same standard as a League One game, Robson certainly turned some head and will have given Jack Ross something to think about.
Sunderland’s league campaign is going in the same way that their EFL Trophy campaign is. The North East outfit are sitting third in the league and are only behind Portsmouth and Peterborough who will both also be keen to make the move up to England’s second flight. The Black Cats will be desperate to make a return and if they can keep Robson fit and have him playing like he did on Tuesday then promotion should come, but for now, the fans are just focused on getting the youngster back to fitness.

The Black Cats were obviously delighted with Robson’s display and will be keen to see him turning out in the league when he’s back to fitness.
