Sunderland have completed their first deal of the January transfer window, signing former Rangers striker Kyle Lafferty. The 32-year-old joins the club having spent the first half of the season with Norwegian side Sarpsborg.
Currently, the Black Cats are obviously chasing promotion to the Championship after missing out last term, losing in the play-off final to Charlton. Indeed, they’re in the play-off places at present, desperately needing a positive season after a catastrophic fall from grace saw them suffer back-to-back relegations.
Lafferty could join upfront with forward Charlie Wyke, hoping to recreate some of the magic he’s experienced in previous strike partnerships. Famously, Lafferty was part of an attacking unit with Paulo Dybala and Andrea Belotti while at Palermo, helping them to promotion to the Serie A.
While it’s unlikely his strike partners at the Stadium of Light will go onto the level of the likes of Dybala, the Northern Irishman could help add goals to a side that hasn’t been prolific, scoring 35 in their 24 games. In fact, that’s the second-fewest in League One’s top ten, with only Wycombe scoring fewer (32).
Still, after the club announced the deal on Twitter yesteday, fans were quick to notice something was a bit off, here’s how they reacted:
