According to the Sunderland Echo, Sunderland have made another approach for Wigan Athletic striker Will Grigg.
The Black Cats have apparently made securing Grigg’s services their number one priority for this January transfer window. With 20-year-old Josh Maja currently being linked with a move away from the Stadium of Light, as reported by The Scottish Sun, Jack Ross’ need for a new hitman could soon become desperate.
Maja is Sunderland’s current leading goalscorer, with 15 strikes in 24 League One outings so far this season. Even if the club are able to hang onto him, they could still do with some additional firepower in order to maintain their title charge.
Grigg has previously proven his quality in League One. Last season, his 19 goal haul in the division helped the Latics to promotion back to the second tier.
However, the 27-year-old has failed to translate that form to the Championship and could now be set for a return to League One. At that level he can be utterly prolific and getting back amongst the goals on a regular basis would restore the 13-cap Northern Ireland international’s confidence.
With or without Maja, Ross would be wise to do all he can to add Grigg to his ranks this month, equally, a switch to Wearside would likely be the best thing for the striker’s career at this stage.
