Sunderland will be preparing for their League Cup clash with Sheffield Wednesday, however, they will be without one of their key men for the match at the Stadium of Light.
The defender suffered a knock against Luton Town at the weekend, although it is believed he could return against Scunthorpe United on Sunday.
Reece James is likely to feature, while Ethan Robson could also make an appearance, whilst Ross admitted that Glenn Loovens will need to be managed, whilst others are expected to miss the clash with The Owls.
“Adam Matthews definitely won’t be involved,” Ross confirmed to the club’s official website.
“He actually did well to get through the game on Saturday, as I thought he might have to go off at half-time, but he managed to get through it and hopefully he should be back for Sunday.
“We also have to manage Glenn Loovens, as it’s a big ask for him now to play three games in a week.
“If you add that to what we already had, we are limited and that’s why I have to weigh up the risk I take with other players as well.”
Sunderland will be looking to build upon their positive start in League One, however, they will know that Sheffield Wednesday could prove to be a test too difficult.
The Black Cats managed to beat Charlton Athletic in their opening game of the season before they were held to Luton last weekend.
Ross will be keen to make sure his side gets through the game without any concerns as they will look to turn their attention towards their game with Scunthorpe on Sunday.
