Whether Sunderland are playing in the Championship or League One next season remains to be seen, however, it appears the club are still looking towards the future in terms of signings.
According to a report by The Mirror (print edition, page 66, March 1), via HITC Sport, Tottenham Hotspur’s Maxwell Statham is one man that seems to be on their radar.
The Premier League outfit’s youngster is out of contract in the summer and is yet to be offered a new deal, which has led to a number of clubs monitoring the situation.
Sunderland are believed to be one of those, although they could find it difficult to land a deal as Nottingham Forest, Brentford and Norwich City – who are said to be leading the chase – are all keen on him as well.
The 18-year-old has been a regular in the Under-18’s this season and has also trained with Mauricio Pochettino’s first-team on occasions.
Statham is clearly another one of exciting prospects to be coming through the Tottenham youth ranks and could be an excellent addition for Sunderland.
The Black Cats could look to make a move for the teenager, however, there will be a number of factors that could go against their attempts to successfully bring him to the Stadium of Light.
Spurs could decide to offer him a new deal, whilst Championship interest in the player from promotion contenders could be too strong for Statham to resist.
