Sunderland are thought to reignite their interest in a striker that they were once rumoured with bringing to the Stadium of Light.
According to a report by The Scottish Sun, it would seem that the Black Cats are still keeping an eye on Lawrence Shankland.
The Daily Record claimed the forward was on Jack Ross’ radar in December as it was understood that he wanted to reunite with a player he once had on his books at St Mirren.
In truth, the 23-year-old had struggled during his two loan spells with that club, however, he has been in fine form this season with Ayr United.
Shankland has hit 29 goals across all competitions so far, taking his tally to 57 goals in his 57 appearances for the Scottish Championship club.
The striker is available on a free transfer in the summer as his contract is set to expire and it is believed he will be on the move.
Despite adding Will Grigg to their squad in the final moments of the January transfer window, Shankland would be an excellent addition for Sunderland to make this summer.
The 23-year-old clearly has the potential to improve in the future and reuniting with Ross at the Black Cats could make perfect sense for a player of his ability.
However, a number of clubs are believed to be interested in the footballer, so whether a move to the Stadium of Light is viable remains to be seen.
