Will Grigg scored Sunderland’s final goal in their 3-2 win against Grimsby Town, earning a win in their first EFL Trophy game of the season.
Happy Jack Ross has gone?
The 28-year-old clinically headed in Denver Hume’s cross to put his side ahead in the 86th minute, as shown in the highlights video on the OfficialGTFC YouTube channel.
Sunderland’s official Twitter account seemed most enthused by the goal putting the team ahead, but many fans were more bothered about who was scoring it:
Will Grigg nods home from close range to give #SAFC the lead once again!

The 13 cap Northern Ireland international had played 12 games prior to the EFL Trophy tie, scoring just one goal, which came against Burnley in the Carabao Cup, as per Transfermarkt.
Some fans have suggested that it was Jack Ross and his tactics that were holding Grigg back, with the feeling being that he will be able to kick on and make a real impact at the Stadium of Light now the Scotsman has departed.
A selection of Twitter reaction to the goal, including posts from excited Sunderland fans, can be seen below:

Ross would have played him in goal

Joking aside, I am more glad that he scored than I am that we’re winning.

Maybe we will finally play around grigg now and he starts banging them in like he’s capable of doing
