Speaking to Sky Sports, Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe has revealed that he would like to eclipse Robbie Fowler’s Premier League goal tally of 162 before he is done playing.
It’s come as news that has excited our resident Black Cats fans here in the Transfer Tavern, who are happy to see their main striker still as hungry as ever for goals as they aim to fight off relegation this season under David Moyes.
It’s been a pretty tough start to life under the Scotsman this season with the Stadium of Light club only winning their first game of this Premier League campaign two fixtures ago but since that win against Bournemouth they have followed it up with a good victory over Hull City.
Defoe has been as influential as ever in helping them turn things around and hit his 150th Premier League goal in his career against the Tigers at the weekend.
For the former Tottenham man, though, things cannot stop there and he’d love to beat the aforementioned Fowler’s record before he is through with the game.
“Someone like Robbie Fowler in my opinion is one of the most natural finishers that this country has produced”, he said.
“So if I can go above him it’d be special.”
The Black Cats latest fixture in their battle against relegation comes away at Liverpool this weekend with Defoe hoping he’ll be able to find the net once more.
How many can he score Sunderland fans? Let us know below…
