Sunderland must replace outgoing Josh Maja with Tom Eaves

Sunderland have to ensure they keep up their impressive form if they want to return into the Championship straight away.

So far this season they have been doing well and sit in third place because of it.

Yet, all that threatens to change now that Josh Maja has left for French side Bordeaux.

With a move away having been sealed recently, Sunderland must keep calm and efficiently source a top replacement, a man whose goals could help them gain promotion.

So what better player to eye than one whose already been prolific in League One this season, namely Gillingham’s Tom Eaves.

Eaves, (who is valued at £90k on Transfermarkt) has enjoyed a terrific season so far whilst playing for Gillingham because on a personal level, he has notched up 14 goals, which makes him the joint-third top goalscorer in the league.

He is well on course to overtake his tally of 17 goals in the league last season and he still has months to achieve that.

The 27-year-old is out of contract in the summer so if Gillingham want to recoup a fee for the clinical striker, now is the time to do so.

It’s surely unlikely the Gills will just give their main man away but Sunderland have much more power to make important transfers such as this one.

With better quality players around him, it wouldn’t be at all surprising to see Tom Eaves tally even more goals in a Sunderland shirt and that’s certainly what the fans will be hoping to see.

Josh Maja will be a huge loss but replacing him with Tom Eaves would be terrific business for Sunderland in their bid for promotion.
