This news arrives after Sunderland released a statement, detailing the end of their pursuit for the left back.

Santon, who spent a number of years with the Toon Army, travelled to the North East for talks after a fee was agreed for the Italian international.

The 25-year old returned to Italy with the Nerazzurri last year, initially on a loan deal from the Magpies, before the move was made permanent by Roberto Mancini last summer.

Santon made over 90 appearances during his spell while on Tyneside, but looks as though he will not be playing for their North East rivals next season.

The full back has also reportedly had interest from Crystal Palace, who were reported to be ready to splash out £3 million on the versatile defender.

The Azzurri international is known for his energetic, pacy runs down the flanks, starting his career as a winger, before reverting to an attacking full back who is capable of playing both sides.
