The pain of a play-off final defeat at Wembley is one that runs deep and is hard to remedy, ask any Sunderland fan and they’ll confirm that for you. The best way to deal with it, though, is not to get down on the thought of another season in League One, but to prepare well for it, and should they sign John Marquis it would be a fantastic step forward.
The 27-year-old striker has been scoring at a rate of knots this season. With 26 goals in his 52 games for Doncaster Rovers this season, the talent is certainly there. According to The Chronicle, the Mackems want to add the play-off semi-finalist to their ranks ahead of the 2019/20 season and considering how badly they lacked a goalscorer in the second half of this season, he’d be a quality addition.
With a Transfermarkt valuation of just £225,000 and coming off of the back of his best ever goalscoring season at League One level, moving to the Northeast would be a quality move for both Marquis and Sunderland. The hitman’s goals were crucial to Doncaster finishing 6th this season and he very nearly saw them past Charlton in the play-off semi-final, so his goalscoring record cannot be knocked.
Whilst a lot of Sunderland fans may not like the idea of poaching Marquis, it makes plenty of sense to move for him. The Englishman has experience at this level and now that he’s finding his best form in front of goal in the third-tier what better place for him to be finding the back of the net on the weekly than the Stadium of Light. The Black Cats could earn a speedy promotion with his goals, so what is not to like about this one?
