Sunderland will need to seek improvements if they are to stand any chance of securing promotion straight back to the Championship this season, as they’ve just not been able to hit top form.
The Black Cats have established themselves as one of the contenders for automatic promotion to the Championship this season, but they’ve slipped up in crunch matches against Portsmouth and Luton Town recently.
Stewart Donald may not have been at the club for a large amount of time, but he will feel confident in saying that Josh Maja is the best player to have graced the turf at the Stadium of Light in recent times.
Indeed, the Englishman has consistently found the back of the net for the Wearside club this season, having produced a whopping 15 goals in 29 appearances. It’s safe to say that the Black Cats wouldn’t find themselves in their current promising position without his efforts, and the crazy thing is that the Englishman is only 20 years of age.
Interestingly, Marcus Maddison has made all the headlines in League One over the past season or so, as he scored 12 goals and provided 23 assists last season and he already has three goals and 15 assists to his name in the current campaign at Peterborough United.
The attacker started off his football career at Newcastle United but things didn’t work out, which ended with him seeking a permanent move to St Johnstone.
Maddison was linked with a whole host of clubs back in the summer months, but nothing came of the interest as he ended up staying on at the ABAX Stadium.
Sunderland currently have the likes of Aiden McGeady, George Honeyman and Lynden Gooch operating in attacking areas, but Maddison’s arrival would be sure to excite supporters even more.
No one at the Stadium of Light this season, other than Maja, has managed to impress as much as Maddison has in League One in the current campaign, and he’s having a quiet campaign by his standards. The 25-year-old should arguably be playing his football in the Championship at least, so the Black Cats could pull off a sensational move if Donald stumps up the cash to secure his services at some point in the future.
The Black Cats’ promotion push could depend on the arrival of a player of Maddison’s calibre.
