Sunderland: Some fans were left underwhelmed despite win against Southend United

Sunderland beat Southend United 1-0 on Saturday, thanks to Luke O’Nien’s 20th-minute diving header from Denver Hume’s cross.
It was important that Phil Parkinson’s side picked up a positive result against the Shrimpers, to help get over the Carabao Cup loss against Oxford United.
There is also significance from the result regarding the table, as it keeps the Black Cats one point behind fourth, with a game in hand on two of the three teams standing in the way of them getting there.
Sunderland’s admin enthusiastically tweeted about the result and three points that followed:

While many fans were happy to see their team get three points on the board, there were some who were still underwhelmed by what they saw from the men in red and white.
This was closer than many of them expected it to be, despite the recent appointment of Sol Campbell, with Sunderland’s one goal taking Southend’s number of goals conceded this campaign to 44 in just 16 games.
A selection of Twitter reaction to the performance, including posts from underwhelmed Sunderland fans, can be seen below:
Team still needs to improve, no pressing or movement from players, tempo needs to improve quicker, build up play to attacking, need more width and pace down flanks, too often cut inside, either Mcgeady or McGuire in no 10 role can’t play together

Will always take the 3 points but that was the most broing game ive ever seen in my 30 years attending, lacklustre, no passion or grit, really worrying as even a mid table side would have given us major problems today. Vast improvement needed

Beat the second bottom team 1-0 at home, Doncaster beat them 7-1 away. Not good enough, 3 rd season in the 3rd tier looking unless we find someone who can score goals
