Sunderland will meet Notts County in the Checkatrade Trophy at the Stadium of Light on Tuesday night.
The Black Cats will return to action after picking up a draw against Walsall in the FA Cup second round at the weekend and it is expected that Jack Ross could use a number of the same players from that game to get some extra minutes.
However, one man that is expected to start the game against the League Two outfit on Tuesday is Duncan Watmore.
The striker has spent more than a year on the sidelines with a knee injury and will play in his first senior game.
“Duncan is in the squad and will start tomorrow,” assistant manager James Fowler revealed to the Newcastle Chronicle.
“It is important for him to get some more game time and we’ll see how he feels at half-time, and monitor it from there.”
It will be a huge boost to have Watmore finally making his way back from a dreadful injury and being available for the Sunderland senior side.
The forward had looked impressive before he suffered his nightmare injury and had looked a handful for defences in the Premier League and Championship.
Should the 24-year-old be able to replicate those performances in League One, Sunderland will be delighted to have him back within the team.
