Sunderland to call off deal for 30-year-old due to PL restrictions

It has been a miserable few months for the Sunderland fans in the Transfer Tavern, who’ve had to endure a frustrating summer window and a poor start to the season.

Now, according to a report from the Chronicle, the Black Cats are set to endure yet more Wearside woe.

They claim the Premier League strugglers are unlikely to sign Scotland international Steven Naismith in January, despite claims to the contrary.

The report says the Scot was close to joining up with his former boss towards the end of the summer transfer window, though the need for defensive cover in the North East reportedly took priority.

A loan deal is said to be unlikely, with the Stadium of Light outfit having both Adnan Januzaj and Jason Denayer in their squad as domestic loans.

Premier League loans are only permitted to two in their own country, meaning they would have to splash big cash for the 30-year-old.
