Talking Tactics: Jack Ross’ blueprint to ensure Sunderland get off to a precious winning start

Sunderland will be desperate to secure promotion straight back to the Championship after a disastrous campaign last time around. Indeed, having enjoyed a rather successful pre-season with plenty of fresh faces coming in, things are looking up for The Black Cats.

Jack Ross will be looking to hit the ground running as the League One campaign kicks off, with The Black Cats searching for nothing less than promotion.

Sunderland will welcome Charlton Athletic to the Stadium of Light in a hotly anticipated League One encounter. The Addicks failed to make the most of a promising position in the play-offs last season, so they themselves will have a point to prove in the race for promotion.

Therefore, having taken Ross’ selections from the pre-season games into consideration, we’ve come up with a team that we think the Scotsman could line up with against Charlton.

Look below to see the entire potential team in FULL…

We’ve gone with a 4-2-2-2 formation, as that is the formation that will get the best out of the players at Ross’ disposal and is familiar from the last campaign. The Black Cats like play the ball into wide areas and make use of the two defensive-minded midfielders in front of the defence, with the full-backs also making their way forward.

Sunderland should give summer signing Jon McLaughlin a run out in goal after his impressive pre-season displays.

In defence, the League One side will operate with Adam Matthews at right-back and Donald Love on the opposite flank, while Tom Flanagan and Glen Loovens will offer a mixture of youth and experience at the heart of the defence.

Lee Cattermole should be fit to take his place in the starting lineup as one of the more senior members in the squad, with another summer signing Dylan McGeouch playing alongside him.

Interestingly, The Black Cats will take a look at youth on either side of attack in the form of Lynden Gooch and George Honeyman. Indeed, the American has impressed so far during pre-season and played a big part in the last campaign, while Honeyman has been one of the standout performers for Sunderland in recent years.

Lastly, Josh Maja and Jerome Sinclair will form the attacking line for Jack Ross. Both men are full of pace and know how to find the back of the net, so they shouldn’t have any trouble in firing their side into the lead against Charlton.
