TT Battle: Greg Stewart vs Will Grigg

Sunderland are thought to be keen on adding extra attacking depth to their side this winter as they look to continue their push for Championship football.

Jack Ross’ side are considered one of the favourites to win promotion from League One, however, it appears the Black Cats are keen to ensure they remain in the best possible position to enable that to happen.

Both Greg Stewart and Will Grigg have been linked with moves to the Stadium of Light during the early stages of January, but who should the Wearside outfit look to sign to give them the best chance of being back in the Championship.

Greg Stewart

The Birmingham City forward appears to be out of favour under Garry Monk and Sunderland have been credited with a possible interest in the player.

The Scottish forward impressed during a temporary stint with Scottish Premiership side Kilmarnock in the first part of the season – bagging eight goals in his 16 appearances.

Stewart’s performances in the top-flight of his homeland have shown that he has the ability to find the net on a regular basis and could prove to be valuable.

The 28-year-old has struggled to adapt in English football though, having failed to find the back of the net in his 22 appearances for the Championship side.

Will Grigg

Grigg made a name for himself with his goalscoring exploits for Wigan Athletic in League One last season – and Sunderland are believed to have tabled an offer for him in the past.

The Northern Ireland international, who subsequently had a song made following his ability to score frequently, hit 19 goals in 43 games for the Latics as they won promotion to the Championship.

However, with the improvements the DW Stadium outfit made over the summer, he has found game-time limited and has scored just three times.

The 27-year-old’s experience of League One would be something Ross’ side could thrive on and he would certainly look to cause teams problems once again.

The Verdict:

Although both men would be great options for Sunderland to have in the final stretch of the season, Stewart should be considered the better option.

The Scot has plenty of experience of playing at a top level and has shown that he can find the back of the net on a consistent basis against players that arguably would be better than those in England’s third tier.

Grigg is obviously lethal when it comes to League One, however, it was over the course of just one season and there could be doubts that he would replicate those feats again considering how much he has struggled in the Championship.
