Unsung Hero: Joel Lynch’s performance should offer some encouragement for Phil Parkinson

Phil Parkinson will have been frustrated that Sunderland lost against Wycombe Wanderers in his first game as the club’s manager.

The only goal of the game came when Darius Charles pounced on Adebayo Akinfenwa’s knockdown and sent the ball flying into the net, as shown in the highlights video on the Wycombe Wanderers YouTube channel.

While there are plenty of aspects to be worked on, one thing Parkinson can take encouragement from is the performance of Joel Lynch.

The 32-year-old was successful with the 1 tackle he attempted during the game, while he also made 5 clearances, 1 interception and won an impressive 10 aerial duels throughout the match, as per WhoScored.

There were also signs of his willingness to stand up and take responsibility on the ball, as he held 7.7% of the game’s overall possession, which was more than any other player on the pitch – though he could do with improving his pass success rate, which was 67%.

Lynch was also given the highest overall rating of any Sunderland player by WhoScored for his performance, getting 7.3.

Parkinson will likely have been looking for players he can build his team around while watching on from the sideline during the Wycombe game, Lynch is probably now among those he will consider doing this with following his performance.
