Josh Maja has stolen all the headlines at Sunderland this season for his blistering opening to the campaign in-front of goal, putting further pressure on Jerome Sinclair in the process.
Boasting a record of 9 goals from 12 League fixtures, it’s absolutely no surprise that Maja has been linked with Manchester City, Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur this week.
Jack Ross has placed his trust in the 19-year-old and he is reaping the rewards thus far, but Sinclair has had a comparatively subdued opening to the season.
Plenty was expected of Sinclair when he signed on a season-long loan deal from Liverpool in the summer, but he has made just three starts in the league so far.
Sinclair made history with the Reds in 2012 when he came off the substitutes bench to become Liverpool’s youngest ever senior player just six days after he had celebrated his 16th birthday.
But despite bursting onto the scene at such a tentative age, Sinclair has faded into insignificance and he now finds himself struggling to make an impression in the third tier of English football.
Now contracted to Watford, Sinclair has joined Sunderland with every hope of ripping up League One and making a huge statement to his parent club, and Maja could be the key to his success.
Sinclair initially struggled to break into the first-team this season but he has started both of Sunderland’s last two fixtures alongside Maja at centre-forward.
The 22-year-old managed to open his account against Peterborough at the beginning of the month after being partnered alongside Maja, and if he is able to establish a solid understanding with Sunderland’s crown jewel there is no doubt that he will flourish at this level.
A future in the Premier League looks extremely unlikely at this moment in time for Sinclair, but with the electric Maja alongside him he is well placed to prove he is worthy of a Championship switch next season.
