What does the future hold for Sunderland after play-off disaster?

Sunderland fans, what you’re about to read you may not agree with, but hear us out before jumping into the comment section! We all know that the Mackems are still feeling the pain of their play-off defeat to Charlton at Wembley, and as another season in League One beckons, the approach with Jack Ross and co take will be imperative to their future.

It may be easy to jump in and spend a load of money on some experienced names who know how to get out of the division, but the danger of that is that you’d be setting yourself up to yo-yo between the Championship and League One, which is not where the Stadium of Light faithful want to find themselves over the next few years. On the contrary, Ross will need to bide his time and play things the right way.

It may not be what the fans want to hear, but after finishing 5th last season and losing twice at Wembley in the cruellest of fashions, it might be time for the Black Cats to go at next season with a different approach. If the management at the Wearside club can unlock the goalscoring form of Will Grigg and Charlie Wyke and tighten up at the back then promotion could be on the cards, but it’s not the be all and end all just yet.

Having a long-term plan must be the aim for the club and whilst it may be tough knowing that any wrong turn could have the world laughing at you through the latest Netflix documentary isn’t a nice feeling. That’s why things have to be done right. The Black Cats may not get back to the Championship until 2021 but making sure when they get there that they stay there is the most important fact.

If Sunderland find themselves going up and then plummeting straight back down it will do them so much more harm than good. Ensuring that when they go up they stay up has to be the key for Jack Ross, and that might result in a longer stay in League One, but could also see the Mackems make it back to the Premier League a lot quicker than they would otherwise.
