Doncaster Rovers will be looking to upset the odds on Sunday when they host Charlton Athletic at the Keepmoat Stadium in the first leg of their League One play-off semi-final.
After experiencing somewhat of a slump in form in recent weeks, Grant McCann’s side finally got back to winning ways last Saturday with a crucial 2-0 victory over Coventry City, a result which saw them secure a sixth-place finish in the third tier.
Although Rovers will fancy their chances of securing a positive result in front of their home fans at the weekend, if they do not play at their maximum, it could turn out to be an afternoon to forget in South Yorkshire.
Currently experiencing a stunning run of results which has seen them win seven of their last eight League One games, Charlton will be supremely confident that they can overcome the challenge of a side who finished 15 points below them in the standings.
However, having witnessed his side lose in the play-offs last year to Shrewsbury Town, Lee Bowyer will be taking nothing for granted.
With the upcoming fixture destined to be settled by whose strike force can dominate proceedings, it will be interesting to see whether John Marquis or Lyle Taylor will come out on top on Sunday.
Although both forwards are lethal in front of goal when at their very best, the battle below will reveal who is more suited for Championship football.
After being released by Millwall in 2016, John Marquis arrived at Doncaster with a point to prove having experienced varying levels of success whilst on loan at Gillingham, Leyton Orient and Northampton Town.
A stunning debut season with Rovers saw the forward fire in a remarkable total of 26 goals as his side achieved promotion to League One from the fourth tier whilst he was equally as impressive during the 2017/18 campaign.
However, whereas his first three years at the Keepmoat saw him continually develop his skill-set, it is clear that he has taken his game to new heights this season as without his contributions, it could be argued that McCann’s side would not be preparing for the play-offs this week.
If Doncaster are to secure a return to the Championship after five years away, they will need Marquis to be playing at full-throttle against Charlton.
TT GRADE: A-
Having played for no fewer than 15 league clubs in the last 12 years, Lyle Taylor has experienced his fair share of highs as well as lows as a footballer.
Yet since joining Charlton Athletic from AFC Wimbledon in 2018, Taylor’s career has gone from strength to strength, with the £270k-rated ace (via Transfermarkt) being directly involved in 35 goals for his team in all competitions this season.
A deadly finisher who also has an eye for a pass, Taylor will be confident that he can lead his side back to the second tier via a trip to Wembley Stadium later this month.
If the Addicks can achieve promotion via the play-offs, there is no reason why the Montserrat international cannot thrive at a higher level next season.
TT GRADE: A
With both forwards experiencing their best campaigns since turning professional, it will be incredibly surprising if neither of them manage to get on the scoresheet at the weekend.
However, if you had to pick one of them to lead the line, it would have to be Taylor. Not only has he scored more goals than Marquis this season, but he has also registered more assists in League One.
