It has been quite a year for Adam Davies at Barnsley, hasn’t it Tykes fans?
Utterly outstanding in between the sticks for Daniel Stendel’s side during their 2018/19 League One campaign, the goalkeeper was one of the key reasons for why the Yorkshire-based outfit were able to secure to promotion to the Championship last month.
Yet despite the fact that Davies was able to keep an incredible total of 19 clean sheets in the third tier whilst also conceding just 36 goals in 42 appearances, it is incredibly surprising that Barnsley have still yet to agree a new deal with the shot-stopper.
Although the club have offered new terms to the Wales international (via BBC Sport), it will be a huge worry if they do end up losing him on a free transfer when his contract runs out at the end of the month.
However, with Stendel knowing just how big of an impact losing Davies could have on his side’s fortunes next season, it is imperative that he lines up a move for a sufficient replacement if the ‘keeper does indeed call time on his five-year stint at Barnsley.
Given his importance to the Tykes, it may be worth negotiating a fresh deal which reaches the £450k-rated ace’s (via Transfermarkt) wage demands as keeping the core of their squad together next year could very well lead to success over the coming years.
Yet with The Sun reporting that Stoke City are close to agreeing a deal to bring Davies to the bet365 Stadium this summer, Barnsley will have to make another approach pretty quickly if they are to convince the keeper not to make the move to Staffordshire.
On an individual basis, the 26-year-old will be wanting to give himself the best chance of becoming a regular starter for Wales and so any move will obviously be made with this in mind.
Whereas staying at Barnsley may end up limiting his chances of representing his country over the coming years, a switch to Stoke could see him benefit in a similar way to Jack Butland who is still being called up by England despite playing his football in the Championship.
